How does music affect our brain?

Scientists have long conducted research on the influence of music on the brain. It is proved that when a person likes what he is listening to, the pleasure center is stimulated, and the brain activity improves.

Listening to your favorite tunes, we encourage the body to produce dopamine - the pleasure hormone. It is produced when we eat tasty or have sex. Any positive, pleasant occupation for us contributes to the development of dopamine.

Scientists working at the Institute of Neurology (Montreal), had experience in which nineteen volunteers took part from 18 to 30 seven years old. They were offered to audition six dozen pieces of music, after questioning the subjects in advance about their musical preferences. All the proposed music was for those participating in the experience unfamiliar, they heard it for the first time.

The subjects were assigned the task of evaluating musical works, having conducted a kind of auction among them. Those who liked the song had to pay a certain symbolic amount of money from their own pockets. As a result, scientists turned out an album of selected musical compositions, for which participants paid the most money.

An MRI machine was connected to each participant participating in the experiment, which monitors the brain's response to the musical composition being listened to. The duration of each track was 30 seconds. This time turned out to be quite enough so that a person could confidently say whether he likes the set melody or not.

While listening to music tracks that the subjects liked, the activity of some of its zones, including the so-called pleasure center, was observed in their brains. Activity was comparable to that which happens when having sex or drinking alcohol.

The brain needs quite a bit of time to determine if a person likes a new tune. Further, its ability to anticipate expectations is triggered and dopamine production occurs. A person experiences pleasure not only from music, but also from the anticipation of the pleasure that music should give him.

Scientists have found that while listening to a melody, emotional associations arise in the human brain. So each musical composition responds to us with a certain emotion.

The more pleasant the sounds of the melody that we hear seem to us, the better the new neural connections are formed, on which our cognitive abilities depend. We are talking about the abilities through which we interact with the environment: attention, perception, memory, logical thinking, imagination, ability to make decisions.

When a person listens to a certain combination of the sounds that make up the melody, there is an activation of the brain parts responsible for the ability to recognize images, for prediction, for emotional perception. The brain parts interact with each other, and the person receives aesthetic pleasure.
